In this piece, rough amethyst’s rich purple colouration is brilliantly pierced by the matt cream calcite formation that is bordered by a green celadonite and white quartz in a manner typical of Uruguayan crystal formations, but atypical of most other locations. As it is a rough state piece it invites us to admire the beautiful, naturally formed layers of basalt, green celadonite, white quartz, purple amethyst and the rare calcite formation at the heart of the piece. The rough rear of the stone gives us an insight into how these wonders are spotted inside the mines. This exquisite mineral sculpture perfectly demonstrates how beautiful natural art can be, without any enhancement or restoration. Calcite formation on amethyst is relatively rare, owing to different formation temperatures required for the two minerals.
