This is a stunning half geode with a shape often referred to by collectors as a “chapel” or “cathedral”, due to the elongated shape that occurred millions of years ago when trapped bubble rose in the liquid basalt. This piece is very special due to its deep, intense purple colour and the variety of crystals sizes. The facing edge of the piece is polished to reveal the white quartz layer, which frames the amethyst. Exteriorly, lies the protectively varnished basalt layer, which is thicker at the bottom, allowing the piece to be freestanding. This piece also contains two calcite formations located in the lower left interior. Calcite formation on amethyst are relatively rare, owing to different formation temperatures required for the two minerals to occur. This is an original piece without any restoration.
